Summer is the one time when children’s reading goes unobserved. There are no reading records, no benchmarking, and no one listening to them read. Some children will spend their holidays lost in books, reading by torchlight long after lights out. For others, reading will be forgotten until they return to school.

When your new class arrives, every child will bring a different story. Some will have a favourite book fresh in their mind, while others may feel anxious that they didn’t read at all. This goes far beyond data. You’ll have children sitting in an unfamiliar classroom, hoping their new teacher will understand them and help them finally find their way into reading.

The Summer Reading Quiz is a simple way to start that conversation.

How it works

Each item is numbered so the whole class can work through the list together as the teacher reads each question aloud. The children circle their answers in pencil: Yes, No, or Not sure. It takes around fifteen minutes, and there’s space for every child to add their own voice by drawing their face as a reader and sharing their favourite book and author.

In one short lesson, a teacher can discover what no assessment ever shows: who loves stories and who prefers information books, who reads with a grown-up at home and who reads alone, who has a favourite author and who has quietly decided that books are not for them.
